Gordon Bennett’s Portrait and a Wet Dream (Historicism) is a pivotal masterpiece from the artist’s sought-after body of work from the 1990s. The work is a sister-piece to the famous ‘Myth of the Western Man (White Man’s Burden)’ from the collection of the AGNSW in Sydney. Cleverly layering colonial symbolism with Aboriginal dot painting and references to Jackson Pollock and Robert Gober, the painting is a great example of Bennett’s unique and critical take on Australia’s history and identity. Similar works are found in the collections of the AGNSW in Sydney, the MCA & Tate Modern Collection, the NGV in Melbourne, the AGSA in Adelaide and the AGWA in Perth. From November 2020 – March 2021, the QAGOMA in Brisbane presented the critically acclaimed retrospective ‘Unfinished Business: The Art of Gordon Bennett’
