Paddy Bedford (1922-2007) was a seminal First Nations painter, and an important lawman from the Kimberley region. His innovative work was honoured with a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2006, and at the Aboriginal Art Museum in the Netherlands in 2009. In 2006 he was one of eight artists commissioned for a permanent installation at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Last year the Paddy Bedford Estate released the final works from the artist’s estate, which resulted in a sell-out exhibition. Paddy Bedford’s work is found in the collections of the NGA in Canberra, NGV in Melbourne, AGNSW in Sydney, MCA in Sydney, QAGOMA in Brisbane and AGWA in Perth. Moreover, his paintings are in prestigious international collections including the Opale Collection in Switzerland, the Essl Collection in Vienna and the Steve Martin Collection in New York. As one of Australia’s most important First Nations artists, Paddy Bedford’s work is well represented in collections here and abroad. Amongst others, his work is found in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth; as well as important private collections such as the Laverty Collection in Sydney, the Opale Collection in Switzerland and the Essl Collection in Austria.
