DEFINING FIGURES
20 February, 2026
In collaboration with 4 Langridge Street, Melbourne.
An examination of the defining figures in the tradition of bark painting
Defining Figures celebrates the three leading artists from three leading artistic communities in Arnhem Land:
Djambawa Marawili AM – Yirrkala
Bardayal “Lofty” Nadjamerrek AO – Gunbalunya
Balang John Mawurndjul AM – Maningrida
Each artist demonstrates how Indigenous art can uphold tradition while innovating and asserting cultural identity locally and resonating internationally. As ‘Defining Figures’ these artists are not only masters of their respective artistic traditions but also visionaries within their communities, creating works that speaks across generations, combining ceremonial fidelity with broader cultural education.
Together, these artists exemplify what it means to be a defining figure: shaping the cultural and artistic landscape, carrying the responsibilities of custodianship, and inspiring new generations to navigate the balance between tradition, innovation, and cultural leadership. Their art is visually compelling and reflects a profound engagement and assertion of identity, authority, and the enduring vitality of Aboriginal cultural systems that should be contunially celebrated.
The presentation and floor talk was done in collaboration with 4 Langridge Street, Melbourne which featured Judith Ryan AM, Jon Altman AM and Kade McDonald.
